Final Exam

Your final exam is to prepare an electronic portfolio and share it with me on Google Drive. The portfolio should contain the following:

  • letter of intent
  • college application essay
  • research paper final draft
  • reflection
The first three items are in Turnitin. You can download them and upload them to your folder if you don't have a copy elsewhere.

Your reflection should be in paragraph form and should address the following (these are suggestions, feel free to add your own):

What assignment are you most proud of this semester and why?
Which assignment would you most like to do over and why?
What have you learned about yourself as a writer?
What areas do you need to improve on next semester?

Interview an Expert

Interviewing someone who has knowledge and expertise in your Senior Project topic is a great way to not only gather information for your research paper but to make a contact who might help you in the project phase. It is enjoyable to talk to someone who is interested in your subject and most people are happy to talk about what they do for a living.

The information you gain from this person is often more valuable than the material taken from written sources. Take full advantage of your time with this expert by properly preparing ahead of time. Use effective interviewing skills, and immediately afterwards carefully review your notes.*

Thanksgiving week would be a great time to complete the interview, either in person or over the phone. Most people have Thursday and maybe Friday off, but they will be at work Monday through Wednesday.

Rough Draft of Research Paper

The rough draft of your research paper is due on Turnitin by the end of the school day on Monday, Nov. 7. We are booked for the library on that day, so anyone who had trouble uploading it to Turnitin over the weekend can do so in the library. This is a failsafe. In reality, it should have been done over the weekend. Do not plan on writing your paper in the library on Monday. It should already be written and you are just looking it over to make sure everything is correct before uploading it to Turnitin.

Your paper should be eight to 10 pages typed, double-spaced, with one inch margins, 12 pt. type, Times, Times New Roman, or Courier font. The Works Cited page counts as a page. For sample papers, see the HHS Style Guide in the box at right or pgs. 346-352 in the Writers Choice book.

For citing sources, see pages 334-338.

Behind the Beautiful Forevers Essay

Choose one of the following two essays. Upload to Turnitin by Friday.

1. The lives of ordinary women are an important part of  Behind the Beautiful Forevers. Do women like Zehrunisa and Asha have more freedom in an urban slum than they would have had in the village where they were born? What is Meena, a Dalit, spared by living in the city? What freedoms do Meena, Asha, and Zehrunisa still lack, in your view? Compare the experiences of the Annawadi women and girls to the experiences of their American counterparts.

2. Zehrunisa remembers a time when every slumdweller was roughly equal in his or her misery, and competition between neighbors didn't get so out of hand. Abdul doesn't know whether or not to believe her account of a gentler past. Do you believe it? Might increased hopes for a better life have a dark as well as a bright side? How does intense desire affect your own life, whether it's hope for a relationship or inclusion in a peer group at school or an acceptance letter to college?

Behind the Beautiful Forevers Prologue

Prologue
1. In the prologue, we are introduced to Abdul, who is hiding after being accused of
attempted murder. He is Muslim, a religious minority in the largely Hindu slum of
Annawadi. (Note: A brief history of Hindu-Muslim tension since Indian independence
from Britain will enhance the reading experience.) What are the two reasons Abdul is fearful of his neighbors? Discuss the role religion plays in initiating this conflict.

2. Make a list of the items found in Abdul’s shed. As you read Behind the Beautiful Forevers,
analyze what this trash reveals about how people live in the overcity—a world Abdul
understands only through its throwaways.

3. Abdul’s motto is to “avoid trouble.” Why is this especially important to him? Is this a
reasonable philosophy of life in a place like Annawadi?

The Stranger Philosophical Journal

As you read The Stranger, by Albert Camus, you will keep a philosophical journal. You may get a special notebook or use notebook paper and staple the entries together. Each entry should be at least a half a page of standard size notebook paper; if you use a smaller notebook, adjust accordingly. Write each entry on a separate page. There will be 13 entries, including three separate entries over one weekend. Journal entries will be posted on the board each day. The entire list is as follows:
1.Read chapter two of The Stranger. On pg. 21, Meursault says, "I don't like Sundays." Compare how you feel on a Friday afternoon with how you feel on a Sunday afternoon. Is there a difference? What is it?
2.On pg. 21, Meursault says, "I cut out an advertisement for Kruschen Salts and stuck it in an old notebook where I put things from the papers that interest me." Cut out pictures, ads, articles that interest you from a newspaper or magazine and paste them on a separate page in your journal.
3. Read chapter three of The Stranger. On pages 27-28, Salamano says, "He's always there." Comment on the love/hate relationship in your life. (sibling, computer, etc.)
4. On page 39, Meursault realizes the sound he hears is Salamano crying. If you heard someone crying (neighbor, friend, stranger), what would you do?
5. Read chapters four and five of The Stranger. Choose one of the following journal entries:
Have you ever been disappointed in a goal? What did you do? Give up or try again?
Does adversity make you stronger?
Is marriage a serious thing? What does marriage mean to you?
What is your impression of Paris? Do you want to visit there?
What is your impression of old age?
What is your best physical quality? What if you lost it?
6, 7, and 8: Read chapter six of The Stranger. Keep a diary for the weekend. You must have at least an entry for Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday. (see weekend entries file in the box for complete instructions.)
9. Read part II, chapter 2. "There are some things I've never liked talking about." (pg. 72) What are the things you don't like talking about? Why? If nothing, why are you able to talk about everything?
10. Read part II, chapter 3. "It was just chance." (pg. 95) Comment on the role chance has played in your life.
11. Read part II, chapter 4. "My fate was being decided without anyone so much as asking my opinion." (pg.98) Have you ever felt this way? Explain.
12. Read part II, chapter 5. "Maman used to say you can always find something to be happy about." (pg. 113) How do you find things to be happy about? What makes you happy?
13. Read Albert Camus's Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech. "Each generation feels called upon to reform the world." (handout pg. 526) Does this observation apply to your generation? Why or why not?

Bring a Text to Class, Two-Minute Key Word Speech

On Friday, you will turn in the six questions you answered on Wednesday
the marked-up Think Aloud checklist
the key word webs from Thursday
the summary that you will write on Friday.

Starting Tuesday
each student will give a two-minute speech on a word that is key to understanding your Senior Project. You should have a visual. It can be a slide, a picture you tape to the whiteboard, or something you draw on the whiteboard.

I will draw names at random, so everyone needs to be ready on Tuesday, even though it will take several days to get through all the students' speeches.
